Sensei Garry Masters
6th Dan Principal Coach - Ken Shin Kai Yoshinkan Aikido (England)
Sensei Garry began practising Yoshinkan Aikido in 1978 under the tuition of David Eayrs, founder of Ken Shin Kai and a founder member of the British Aikido Board. Over the years Sensei Garry has accumulated an extensive knowledge of Yoshinkan and various other styles of Aikido, receiving additional tuition from Terada Shihan – 9th Dan, Francis Ramasamy - 6th Dan, Morihiro Saito and Yasuhisa Shioda. In addition to this he has also gained experience in Iaido, Shoto, Jodo and Tanjo winning the first ever Jodo championship held in England (Mudan Section) in 1986. He has given many Aikido demonstrations, including displays for Prince Andrew, the Japanese Naval Squadron, the Malaysian Sports Minister, Japanese Consul, British Aikido Board,
Terada Shihan, Inoue Shihan, Takeno Shihan, Lord Mayor and regional television.
Sensei Garry has travelled 3 times to Malaysia, once to Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, Japan and hosted visits to England by Terada Shihan and Francis Ramasamy Shihan, in order to extend his knowledge of Yoshinkan Aikido. Sensei Garry was the Chief Instructor of the Ken Shin Kai Aikido Organisation, from 1985 to 1996. In 1996 after David Eayrs left Ken Shin Kai to establish Yoshinkan Aikido in Russia, Sensei Garry was elected as Principal Coach & Chairman of Ken Shin Kai which consists of over
300 members in dojos located across England. In his time as Principal Coach, Sensei Garry has obtained International recognition for Ken Shin Kai by establishing it as an Independant Yoshinkan Aikido Organisation, recognised by the International Yoshinkan Aikido Federation (IYAF), the headquarters for Yoshinkan Aikido based in Japan.
Sensei Garry is the second highest Yoshinkan Aikido Instructor in the UK holding the Internationally recognised and authenticated rank of 6th Dan Instructor in Yoshinkan Aikido. Sensei Garry received his 6th Dan from Japan after being graded by Terada Shihan - 9th Dan Yoshinkan Aikido Instructor. The grading was held in the UK on 15th April 2002, at an International Yoshinkan Aikido Seminar hosted by Ken Shin Kai. The Seminar was attended by many high ranking Yoshinkan Aikidoka and taught by Terada Shihan, who is currently the highest ranked Yoshinkan Aikido Instructor in the world and Chief Consultant to the IYAF.
All of this has been achieved by Sensei Garry, despite the fact that in view of a heart condition, and having suffered a brain haemorrhage, he has been advised not to participate in any type of sport or physical exercise.
Sensei Garry is supported in his role as Principal Coach by Ken Shin Kai Branch Chief Instructors, Sensei Terry Harrison - 5th Dan (London & Herts. Branch)
Ken Shin Kai was founded to promote the art of Yoshinkan Aikido and under the guidance of Sensei Garry manages to avoid most of the political arguments now prevalent in large organisations by maintaining a social, friendly and dedicated environment. Members regularly meet socially and enjoy training with Aikidoka from a variety of Aikido organisations and styles. Members are keen to help the Organisation in anyway and this is reflected in the steady growth and stability of the Organisation.
